چکیده

This paper provides evidence on job flows and worker flows at the level of the employer. We ask whether firms grow by increasing hires, reducing separations, or both, and we develop a graphical approach to address this. We use a new dataset to estimate the relationship between job flows and worker flows at the employer level. We show that most employers are simultaneously hiring and facing separations. We also show that declining firms continue to hire, and growing firms continue to lose workers. The relationship between hires and separations differs between employers, varying with size, average wage and industry. q 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. JEL classification: J60; J63

Labor market flows in the cross section and over time

Many theoretical models of labor market search imply a tight link between worker flows (hires and separations) and job gains and losses at the employer level. We use rich establishment-level data to assess several theoretical models and to study the relationship between worker flows and jobs flows. Hires, quits, and layoffs exhibit strong, highly nonlinear relationships to employer growth rates...

Labor Market Flows in the Cross Section and Over Time 20 March 2011

Many theoretical models of labor market search imply a tight link between worker flows (hires and separations) and job gains and losses at the employer level. Partly motivated by these theories, we exploit establishment-level data from U.S. sources to study the relationship between worker flows and job flows in the cross section and over time. We document strong, highly nonlinear relationships ...

In theory, it is assumed that the levels of these two types of flow should relate directl...

VERY PRELIMINARY AND INCOMPLETE Labor Market Flows and Vacancies in the Cross Section and Over Time

Many theoretical models of labor market search imply a tight link between worker flows (hires and separations), vacancies, and job flows (employer-level employment growth) at the employer level. Using establishment data from multiple sources for the U.S., we show that hiring, quit, layoff, and vacancy rates exhibit strong, highly nonlinear relationships to establishment growth in the cross sect...
